He has also been discussing his recent and upcoming animation work on the Seikon no Qwaser and B Gata H Kei anime series in recent blog posts. In an August video shoot, Dunst danced to The Vapors' "Turning Japanese" song in a sailor-suit costume and a blue wig in Tokyo's Akihabara otaku shopping district. Murakami and McG happened to have the same manager, and the manager brought the two together at the end of last year to discuss the collaboration.

This is not the first time that Dunst played a majokko (literally, magical girl or witch girl) — she voiced the title character in Disney's English dub of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service film. The Moon Chase blog notes that she also revealed herself as a childhood Sailor Moon fan with memorabilia in her bedroom in a April 21, 1997 photospread in People magazine and with a June 2002 interview in Esquire magazine. Shortly after Murakami and McG met again for the project in mid-May, McG said during a advance screening of Terminator Salvation that he likes Sailor Moon and other Japanese anime and movies, and he added, "I love Akihabara!"

The Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood television anime series will premiere on Cartoon Network ’s Adult Swim programming block at midnight EST/PST early Sunday morning in the United States. The weekly English-dubbed episodes will also be available, as a download-to-own option, on the PLAYSTATION Network and Zune Marketplace on Sundays. Each new dubbed episode will then stream from the Adult Swim website on Wednesdays.

Like the first Fullmetal Alchemist television series in 2003-2004, the ongoing Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime adapts Hiromu Arakawa’s dark fantasy manga about two brothers who risked their bodies with human alchemy to unsuccessfully resurrect their mother. Now the two attempt to restore their bodies by seeking the illusive Philosopher’s Stone, and they are not alone in their quest.

Unlike the earlier anime effort, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows the manga more closely; Arakawa has acknowledged that her manga is coming to an end soon. The new anime retains the same main cast from the earlier anime’s English dub, except for two recasted characters and one all-new character. Maxey Whitehead replaces Aaron Dismuke as Alphonse Elric, and J. Michael Tatum already replaced Dameon Clarke as Scar in the Fullmetal Alchemist: Premium Collection video spinoff. Bryan Massey plays the new character Isaac McDougal

New York Magazine’s Vulture blog reports that the Hughes brothers — the directors behind Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, From Hell, and The Book of Eli — are negotiating with the Warner Brothers movie studio to direct the planned live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira manga. ComingSoon.net reported in December that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the writers of the first Iron Man film, wrote the most recent script drafts for the two proposed films. According to the Vulture blog, “an official release from the studio is expected later this week” regarding Albert and Allen Hughes’ involvement.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, The Aviator) is producing the planned live-action film adaptation through his Appian Way production company. Mad Chance producer Andrew Lazar (Jonah Hex, Space Cowboys) said at Comic-Con International in August that the live-action project “is a real priority project for Warner Brothers” but is not likely to go into production before the third quarter of 2010 for a 2011 release. Otomo is an executive producer and consultant on the project.

ANN Exclusive: On Thursday’s ANNCast podcast, producer Joseph Chou (Halo Legends, Appleseed: Ex Machina) said that the proposed live-action film adaptation of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime is still “very active.” Chou is listed as a producer on the project. Chou mentioned that there is a lot of paperwork to clear, but “once that’s resolved, I think it would be on the fast track, so we’re hoping that it’ll start moving even next year.”

Chou discussed the difficulties of selling the concept of the film to studios in Hollywood, due to the complexity of the story. However, Chou said that “right now we’re with a producer and a studio that really understands beyond the whole mecha impact.” Chou added, “They’re really looking beyond that, and really looking at drama, human elements, even to those elements that appeal to otaku.”

Chou also said the reason the movie stopped moving forward was due to the anime market crash. Chou said “the reason it stopped in its tracks was not because [John Ledford, co-founder of A.D. Vision and ADV Films] wasn’t paying attention to it … he actually amassed a considerable amount of money, financing, for the film … but then I think he just needed to stop, because the whole market was falling apart at that time,” and as a result the movie “fell on the wayside.” At that time Chou took over the task of presenting the film to Hollywood producers and studios. Chou mentioned that Ledford is still a part of the project.

The project was first announced at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival as a joint project between Gainax, Weta Workshop, and ADV Films. At that time, Ledford had given the project an “aggressive timetable.”

The websites MoviesOnline.ca and ScreenRant.com have both posted interviews with Laeta Kalogridis, the current screenwriter for Dreamworks and Steven Spielberg’s planned live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell cyber-police manga. Kalogridis was once also hired by James Cameron to script his planned adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga. She is also an executive producer and screenwriter on Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and an executive producer on Cameron’s Avatar.

In the interviews, Kalogridis reiterated that the script for the live-action Ghost in the Shell will be based on Shirow’s original manga and not Production I.G and Mamoru Oshii’s animated movie adaptation. Like the manga, Kalogridis said the upcoming movie will have “a lot of action … lots of action.”

However, as a nod to Oshii’s anime film adaptations, Kalogridis also added, “there’s still going to be a lot of atmosphere – [The movie] is about vast possibilities – all of this technology, the Internet – it’s about the limitless possibilities of this technology.”

Kalogridis also commented on a possible trend of more live-action adaptations of anime and manga in Hollywood, saying “I think anime and manga are slowly becoming a big part of our mythos, I think yes, they’re sort of a natural fit for films.”

The American arm of the manga’s original Japanese publisher Kodansha is reprinting the manga after Dark Horse Comics had the license. Kodansha also launched two new manga series based on the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex television anime series in December .
