Mahou Sensei Negima Review by GarryM
It is the first day of a new semester, and Asuna is running to school. She wishes with all her heart that her form tutor will be the same as last year, the gorgeous Takahata Sensei! She finds herself running along side a small boy, obviously heading in the same direction. Since it is an all girls high school, this is somewhat unexpected. Even more of a shock is to find out that the boy is her new form tutor, replacing the adored Takahata Sensei!
Negi Springfield is 10 years old, has completed an English University Education, and obtained his teachers license. What the girls don’t know is that he an Junior Wizard, and in order to become a Master Magi, he is required to teach at a foreign school.
Asuna is no fool. Wanting to get rid of the interloper, and resume her infatuation with Takahata, she soon catches Negi performing magic. In order to keep his secret, Negi tries to erase her memory. His spell fails, but has interesting side effects. Finally, Asuna agrees to keep quiet, if Negi will become her “practice partner” for her confession of love to Takahata.
What should have been a straightforward teaching assignment, if such a thing exists for a 10 year old, turns out to be anything but. His students all start competing for his attentions, and we not talking academically. In between fending off their attentions, he tries to pacify the outraged Asuna. Something made more difficult when the school principal decrees that he needs to lodge in her room! The fun really starts when he realises that there some sort of vampire preying on the girls every full moon. Realising that he needs a “partner” to protect him from physical attacks when he is doing magic, Asuna seems the perfect choice, but will she agree? Especially as most magicians end up marrying their partners!
Characters:
Asuna:
Energetic! Does every thing at a run, and has an amazing spinning back kick. Unfortunately, studying is not one of her strong points. Hates “brats”, and now has one sleeping in her room!
Negi:
Studious and good willed, he tries to look after his students properly. As you would expect from a 10 yr old junior wizard, this often doesn’t work out so well.
The class:
The class seems to include a robot, a female ninja, a ghost, a cosplay idol, The Library Exploration Squad, the Dunce Rangers, and a wealthy heiress.
Comedy abounds as Negi is caught in a series of compromising situations. Spells frequently go awry, almost always causing problems for Asuna. A misdirected love potion, enlarging breasts, sneezes that destroy items of clothing.
Balance that with a flying battle with the vampire, destruction of demons, fights with black magicians, and the need to protect some mysterious secret within the school.
Romantic situations are numerous, as the girls vie for his feelings. All seemingly for nothing, as Negi must find his true partner, and seal the spell with a kiss!
With a totally unexpected climax, there are thrills and spills all the way in this Romantic Comedy
Music:
Generally, the music doesn’t stick in my mind, so I guess it must suit the storline pretty well, or be pretty bland and boring!
Picture Quality: Although the characters are well drawn, and with sufficient distinguishing characteristics for you to keep track of them, the overall impression is of a slight fuzziness. Enlarging to full screen increases the problem.
When I first started watching, I just had to keep going! Saw the entire series (29 episodes) in about 3/4 nights! There are also 3 OVAs currently posted, and the series is still going in Manga.
Overall, I have rated this at 8.5/10
