Summer Memories ‘09

kanamemoKanamemo
Nakamachi Kana is a junior high school girl. Her grandmother passed away and she was left all alone. She finds a newspaper carrier station and starts working as a live-in carrier. Her room has a hole on the wall. Other female workers living next door comes in through the hole and start a wild merrymaking.

Tenser: An entertaining and light hearted yuri comedy. Shallow plot, characters, and artistic rendering.

princessPrincess Lover!
Arima Teppei lost his parents in a traffic accident. His grandfather Isshin adopted him by force and ordered him to succeed the head of Arima Group Corporation. At Shuuhou Gakuen, a high school only for wealthly students, Teppei’s new life as a celebrity starts.

Blarg: princess lover was an interesting anime but didn’t go the way i had hoped. if you like romance animes with slight action its perfect and has a decent plot considering. but in my opinion would of done better if they had more enphasis on the action

Tenser: I believe monkies throwing shit against the wall and typing out what they think it spells could create better plot devices.

umi monogatariUmi Monogatari ~ Anata ga Itekureta Koto
Marin and her sister Urin live in the sea. One day they find a ring fallen into the sea. They get out of the sea and meet a girl Kanon, the owner of the ring. Kanon tells them she doesn’t want the ring anymore because it was given by her boyfriend whom she just broke up with, and she throws it into the forest. Marin thinks Kanon is still in love with him and looks for the ring with her sister. But Urin accidentally breaks a seal near a shrine…

Tenser: Really quite an acoustical masterpiece. The story is drab but the but the yuri subtext and occasionally stunning visuals compliment what is nothing less audio orgasms.

fightFight Ippatsu! Juuden-Chan!!
Plug is a “Juuden-chan” or “Charger Girl” from a dimension parallel to Earth’s own. Her job is to find humans in our dimension that are depressed, transform into her rubber suit, and charge them up to revitalize their energy.

Hanks: Not being much of a “tits and camel-toe” fan, I thought this was worth sticking with as the main female lead (plug) was a great character that I gave a fuck about enough to know how her story would unfold. A charmingly innocent, funny, dizzy, hard working, and ,more importantly, caring young girl who, as her job, “fixes” peoples’ depression with a blast from her power conductor as a “pick me up.” What really endeared me to her was her level of sacrifice to her duty. Instead of going for quick fixes to get her quota, she takes time to watch and study her “targets” to enable a longer lasting “cure.” There are plenty of tits and vag creased panties to keep the balls aching in this anime; and if you are into golden showers or watching girls pee when they reach climax, then there’s enough here for you too. My only concern in this anime was the lead male characters’ reliance on smacking the girls around with a baseball bat as a method of comunicating his anger, frustration, surprise as well as the ensuing “peeing” from one of the female characters when he does this to her.

taishouTaishou Yakyuu Musume
In 1925 (year 14 of the Taisho era) baseball is still quite unknown in Japan and there are only a few male teams. After being told by a baseball player that women should become housewives instead of going to school, 14-year-old Akiko invites her friend Koume to start a baseball team in order to prove him wrong. During this time, when even running was considered too vulgar for women, baseball is known as “what the boys do” and they face many difficulties when having to find enough members, to get permission from their parents and also when learning about the sport itself, which they soon discover to be more difficult than expected.

Tenser: An interesting little show about growing up in Taisho Era Japan where females are conflicted between conservative Japan and the slolwy integrating western culture.

tokyoTokyo Magnitude 8.0
The story centers on Mirai, a middle school freshman girl who goes to Tokyo’s artificial Odaiba Island for a robot exhibition with her brother Yuuki at the start of summer vacation. A powerful tremor emanates from an ocean trench, the famed Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge crumble and fall, and the landscape of Tokyo changes in an instant. With the help of a motorcycle delivery woman named Mari who they meet on Odaiba, Mirai and Yuuki strive to head back to their Setagaya home in western Tokyo.

Hanks: WoW. Another tear jerker. It’s a little predictable and formulaic, but beautifully made. I cried hard for a whole 23 minutes during the last episode. The boast at the front of the anime, “we researched soooo hard…blah blah blah,” was a little misleading and a little pretentious. There was no evidence of “intensive research” beyond what a nine year old could have found. The boasted “research” didn’t make any noticeable impact on the earthquake sequences or damage control plot points other than the design of the opening sequence stills. The last 2 episodes definitely 9.0 on the emotional Richter scale. GREAT ANIME.

uminekoUmineko no Naku Koro ni
Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima. The head of a wealthy family named Kinzo Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzo’s assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo’s servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered.

Fruits: Arc to arc this series begins to lose its capability to be intriguing. The characters can become a bit muddled as there are just too many to keep track of, and arc finale’s leave too much to the imagination. This series does little to live up to the potency of plot twists that its “weeping” predecessor gifted us with a few years ago.

bakeBakemonogatari
The short stories in the two volumes of Bakemonogatari deal with a high school boy named Koyomi Araragi and strange students he encounters. (“Bakemonogatari” is a wordplay on the Japanese term bakemono for supernatural creatures and the term monogatari for stories.) One student, a girl named Hitagi Senjougahara, almost literally falls into his lap, only to have him discover she has no weight.
Blarg: bakemonogatari was a slow paced anime with a strange plot. i liked the aspect of the “odities” but i dont like slow paced shows. the drawings were great and the chartars as well, but another one that could of done alot better

Tenser: I don’t understand the complaints about this show. It deserves to be considered a top tier anime. With its amazing artistic stylings, fascinating stories, and enjoyable characters I can not think of a bad thing to say about it.

canaanCANAAN
Two years ago, Shibuya was ravaged by a biological terrorist attack using the deadly Ua virus. Maria Osawa was saved when her father inoculated her against the virus, but is left with partial amnesia from the shock. She works as a cameraman when she reunites with a girl named Canaan in Shanghai, China. A gifted assassin with synesthesia, she is under orders from an unknown organization for a yet unspecified mission.

Blarg: cannan turned out to be a superb anime. of cource it didnt meet my expectations but it was surprisingly well done

Hanks: I started off loving this anime. It looked like it had potential for action/horror, but then it kinda withered and died. There are interesting characters, but the generic “oh look people have been effected/mutated by an cataclysmic event let’s find out why” wore thin as nothing was really explored and no/little action ensued.

yokuYoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou
The story revolves around Koyomi Morishita, a clumsy high school freshman girl who is often mistaken for a grade-schooler because of her shortness. Koyomi becomes a disciple of Misa Anehara, a 25-year-old graduate student who happens to be one of the most powerful modern-day magicians.

Tenser: This one tricked me. I expected the series to have as much ecchi as the Episode 00 OVA. Adjusting to a different personality and a non-chronological beginning make it a difficult watch.

0707-Ghost
Barsburg Empire’s Military Academy has always been known for training the elite with potential to become superb soldiers who won’t bring shame to the name of the empire. The students of the special program freely utilize an ability called “zaiphon” to fight. Everyone’s capabilities are different, and in many cases, reflect their nature. However, not everything is what it seems, and nothing will be the same for Teito Klein after passing the last exam…

Tenser: Too many yaoi undertones for my taste.

basquashBasquash
On the planet Earthdash, its inhabitants gaze on its moon and the technologically advanced lunar city of Mooneyes with awe. Dan JD, a boy living in Rollingtown on Earthdash’s surface, gets caught up in Bigfoot Basketball — a fast-paced sport played with giant Bigfoot robots.

Hanks: ….I loved this anime. It’s a well made, original take on a sports/mecha anime. An interesting and diverse ensemble of well-defined, likable characters. There’s a great love story arc throughout the main “developing/growth of a hero/legend” premise for those that need more than action and bravado. Although the “hero” is a little obnoxious his hidden charm and sensitivity drags you along with him, and you wave your flags when he achieves any sort of “goal,” be it personal or “professional.” The production design and visuals are powerful, original, and simply stunning. The color palate and use of light make for an excellent cinema-graphic feast. I’m almost sure they created brand new colors for this anime to make this a wonderful visual treat through every frame. The music throughout was top notch. I normally skip the opening tracks but this anime’s opening was pretty good. There are a few large basketball sized bewbs here for you tit lovers. And if you hate sports or mecha anime, don’t worry this is hardly either of those.

Fruits: A stylized and beautiful shift to a foreign land whose artistry provides the viewer with far more than the plot and characters are capable of. A masterpiece of animation with a terribly annoying protagonist, and just enough substance to make it watchable.

hayateHayate the Combat Butler!!
Hayate is still working as the Sanzenin Butler. Hinagiku appears a lot more as scenarios that include herself and Hayate allude to potentially mutual feelings between them. Nagi is also interested in escalating her relationship with Hayate, since her perception of her relationship with Hayate remains based on the miscommunication that occurred on their first meeting.

Fruits: A second exclamation point is about all this series was capable of adding. There is a severe drop-off in substance and humor from the first season, and a growing focus on the emotional instability of a cast full of teenage girls. Even those that adored the first 50 epsiodes and the manga will have trouble finding this series a must watch.

phantomPhantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~
A spate of mafia assassinations occurs in America, the work of the mysterious organization named Inferno. “Phantom” is their strongest and capable assassin, however a lone tourist witnesses Phantom’s latest act of murder. He unwittingly exposes the top assassin’s true identity, a young girl named Ein. Witnesses are usually killed, but the man is captured and taken to be brainwashed into “Zwei”, Inferno’s newest assassin, with no memory of who he is. From this point on, Zwei is drawn into a world of conspiracy, deceit and violence.

Hanks: … Slow, irritating, poorly “acted,” wooden, pretentious, sloooooooooooooow. It felt like an anime shown through syrup. How he had any emotional connection to her is just lost to me!

Tenser: Not sure what show Hanks was watching. Phantom contains a plot that twists and turns in unexpected ways. Coupled with above average animation and characters that are actually unique and driven make it a must watch.

sakiSaki
Miyanaga Saki is a high school freshman who doesn’t like mahjong. Ever since she was a child, she would lose her New Year’s gift money during her family mahjong game. If she won, her parents would be upset, and if she lost, well, she lost. As a result, she’s learned to play in such a way that her score always remains plus/minus zero: not good enough to win, but not bad enough to lose. When we meet her, she’s being dragged to her school’s mahjong club by an old friend. How will a girl who hates mahjong, yet has become adept at the game as a result of her upbringing, survive in this environment?

Tenser: Great show. Lots of yuri subtext. I’ve never played mahjong and yet I loved the matches.

shangShangri-La
The story is set in a neo-futuristic age, in which Tokyo has turned into the world’s largest “jungle-polis” that absorbs carbon dioxide. A tower city called Atlas houses the rich and privileged, and is the object of yearning of all who are not allowed to enter. But Atlas also has ancient secrets which cause a sudden whirl of events. Festooned by colorful characters such as a riotous teenage girl, a child genius, a juvenile princess, a drag queen, a female doctor, an army major, and an elderly gentleman and lady, SHANGRI-LA’s hard-core world view plays out as an anime action saga.

Fruits: A brilliant plot concept, this series fills the viewers expectations, and at times is able to keep up. Disjointed storyboarding prevents this from approaching the top echelon of fiction works, but characters become increasingly interesting throughout and there is just enough evolution of storytelling to keep one interested from start to finish.
